Loving our Neighbors…
Posted on Jan 12, 2011 in Featured | 0 commentsA note from the founder…
One of the things that has impressed me most about beginning and running the ministry of Studio Del Creador is the personal journey that God has taken me on to learn what it means to truly live out His second commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev. 19:18).
While Studio Del Creador was created with a focus on youth, reality is that SDC is providing a refuge and a place filled with the love of Christ for people of all ages and from all walks of life.
We want people to feel welcomed, at home, free to express themselves, and most importantly loved while they are in the studio. It has been our intention since day number one. Never did I imagine how far His love would reach, and what it would cost to truly carry out His vision here in Tecate, Mexico. Two years into ministering in Tecate, we are proud to see the variety of people that unite here in God’s house and look beyond the differences. The Love of Christ is greatly contagious.
The lesson began early on in 2009, shortly after opening our doors. One day a drug addict asked if he could wash my car parked in front of the studio for a few pesos. I didn’t have any change on me so I turned him away, but felt the urge to run after him into the park across the street from the studio. A friend of mine followed me. We shared the message of Jesus Christ as he began to pour out his life struggles as well as tears. Upon praying the prayer of salvation with him, he expressed to us, “I have lived here all my life, but never would have imagined that God would send angels to us here in this run-down, abandoned plaza…Everyone rejects me for the way that I am, I enter the corner store and they run me out, but here, you guys extend an arm to me.” That night our friend received the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ and it clicked in my heart the importance of loving all our neighbors as ourselves, no matter how different they may be. Nearly two years later, all of his family has recommitted their lives to the Lord and they all attend the studio on a regular basis.
One afternoon two men walked in, one in a wheelchair and the other pushing. They had heard the worship music playing from the studio and came to ask if we had a Bible in English for the partially paralyzed man that was in the wheelchair, Albert. He grew up in the states, but got deported a few years ago. After a bad accident working with the Mexican carnival, he was left without part of his skull, and paralyzed from the waist down. 50 years old, he since gave his life to the Lord and is now looking for the reason God has allowed him to survive such tragedy…and slowly his feeling is coming back. After giving him an English Bible we offered to pray for his paralyzed legs. We prayed over him and he stood and walked! Full of excitement, Albert pushed his own wheelchair out the door and said good-bye! The second he stepped out, a 5.9 earthquake hit Tecate! God is powerful, Almighty and ever-working!
On a normal basis we have homeless whom are struggling with drug and alcohol addictions, walk in our doors and instead of begging or asking for change for food, they ask if we know of any Christian Drug rehabs where we could kindly take them. I don’t know how these people know about us, but time and time again people are turning to the studio in times of need, not only to learn about art and music. God seems to be directing the lost and hopeless into our doors asking us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
For us as a ministry, teaching art and music has become secondary to the Lord’s commandment for His children: to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
